Negative Mind State Fire Drill (Sitting with Sport Difficulty)

Get ready. This exercise can be an emotionally tough one. And, at the same time, this exercise can ultimately be quite freeing. Please bring to mind a difficult moment in sport. We want you to invite a negative mind state and run you through a fire drill. The goal is to help you learn to tolerate unpleasant, difficult mind-states. We suggest that you do not start with recalling the absolute worst moment from your sport. Think about the challenge on a scale of 1 to 10. We don’t want you to be bored and also don’t want to put you into a truly distressed state. Think of something moderately difficult to have to bring to mind – say a 4 or 5 (moderate) on a scale of 1 (nothing memorable) to 10 (awful). Choose something that is a bit hard to recall but not over the top painful!

In few moments we will ask you to visualize this moment. So for now recall as best you can the scene. It is ideal if you can find someone to do this exercise with you, so you can talk about what you experience once complete. If not, you can go through this one on your own. In your difficult sport or performance experience. Take a few moments to recall this situation.Who was there?
